Genesis 3:1-6                     Johnsfield Baptist Church           August 2, 2000

Introduction: Most despised Book.

Whenever they go to chopping up God’s Word in the Universities and Colleges and seminaries, the first 11 chapters are always the first to go.

Chapter 3 gives a point by point account of how that tampering with the Word of God brought sin into this world.

What these liberals and Christ rejecters can’t stand is the fact that messing with God’s Word is satanic in origin. To deal with this they relegate these chapters to the dumpster branding them “divine hate literature”.

Now, what does the Word of God teach?

Let’s divide this up. We’ll look at the serpents roll, Eve’s role and Adam’s role, in this Biblical drama.

Serpent’s roll:

v.1 And he said unto the woman…

You’ll never find this verse expounded upon in the feminists class room.

You won’t find this on the discussion list in a course on Feminism 101.

Actually women kind of get the short end of the stick and get a lot of teasing because the serpent chose to work through the “weaker vessel

But instead of looking to the BOOK for a way out, many women have reacted by rejecting the BIBLE and joining the feminists.

Instead of going to the BOOK to ensure against deception many have turned to some of Satan’s other deceptions. Drugs, self, materialism, Catholicism or sexual perversion.

The devil really doesn’t care if you go to Hell as an atheist or religious.

WHY did Satan choose to bide his time and to work on the woman?

I can think of four possible reasons:

  1. More suspicious (should have been suspicious of serpent) Where did you get that haircut? Man- “Rocco the barber” Woman- “Why, what’s wrong with it?
  2. Women have the power of persuasion over their husbands. COME ON LADIES DON”T DENY IT!!! That’s one of the reasons God gave us wives to be a godly influence in our lives.

Women can get a real foot hold in a mans life. The power of persuasion:

ILL. Daphne and Astronomy chart.

You see the Devil reasoned if he could get Eve he could pretty much leave convincing Adam up to her.

  1. Women are less open to regimentation.

-         Men are used to taking orders

-         Women are kind of left to do their own thing

-         Shoe shopping with women –30 pairs and won’t take advise (“you don’t really like them you just want to get home” SUSPICIOUS you see!) Goes back and gets the first pair she tried on. A man finds a pair and buys them.

There’s a fourth reason:

  1. Eve heard the command from God second hand. She didn’t have the originals. She heard the command of God second hand from Adam –and if she’s any kin to these modern Bible translators perhaps it had lost something in the translation.

Perhaps, because she hadn’t heard God’s voice directly it has lost some of the force-at least in her mind.

Perhaps that is a possibility.

Eve’s roll:

v.2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

Genesis 2:16  ¶And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

Well after checking into the originals we find something missing.

How important is that little word “freely” ?

This word reflects on the very character of God:

God is GOOD,

God is GENEROUS } GOD is in the gift giving business.

How important is that little word “freely” ?

Well in the NT it is connected with our salvation.

Revelation 22:17  And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

God offers life FREELY.

Did something get lost in the translation. Only in the NEB (New Eve Bible)

Subtracting from the Word of God…

Continuing along this theme of Bible corruption and in the same vein we read:

Genesis 3:3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Now, what tree is in the midst of the garden?

Genesis 2:9  And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

I guess God is trying to keep something from us.

God is not freely offering all that is good and neither is He allowing access to the tree of life.

Folks, God is not keeping us from the tree of life!

We are only 3 verses into the chapter and Eve has managed to subtract from the Word of God and here, she corrupts the message!

Quite a feat and she’s not even half done.

Genesis 3:3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Where do you find that in the oldest and best manuscripts?

God is such a meany- we can’t even touch it.

Genesis 2:17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

God never said they couldn’t touch it. Maybe what they should have done was chop it up for fire wood and the world wouldn’t be in this mess.

ILL. The roots of all false religion can all be found right here. ADDING to the word of God.

Colossians 2:20  Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

21  (Touch not; taste not; handle not;

22  Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

23     Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Genesis 3:3  But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Reaching deep into her Hebrew lexicon, and comparing the most ancient authorities and retaining the integrity of the of the original thoughts she comes up with “lest ye die”

Genesis 2:17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

The thoughts preserved isn’t it?

“Lest” connotes possibility.

     “         “       probability.

But how much stronger is THOU SHALT SURELY DIE.

ILL. A preacher tried this with his son. TV channel. (expand).

You’ll notice something else as well. She fails to apply the Scriptures to herself. “Ye” instead of “I” or “we”. (expand)

She’s called mother Eve. She’s the mother of all the Bible changers and adders and corrupters.

She’s the mother of the RC church which adds the apocrypha and tradition.

‘’         ‘’     ‘’       Bad News for Modern man, Soul food, the Way, and the dead letters, the dead sea scrolls and the NIV!!!

Let’s look again at the Serpents roll.

Genesis 3:4  And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

You’ll notice that the devil gets that word freely back in there. He denied the Word of course and Eve should have been indignant. The devil looked for a reaction and got none, and so he went on boldly with his lie.

For any lie to be good it has to contain some truth to it.

Let’s analyze it:

For God doth know

True. Sure, God knows everything.

that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened,

That true? Cf. Genesis 3:7  And the eyes of them both were opened,

and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Is THAT true?

Oh yes it is…

Genesis 3:22  ¶And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil:

The Devil left out a few things though:

God knows more than He will reveal to man. He keeps some things hidden. He keeps some knowledge from us for our own good.

Opened eyes can be painful.

Some gods are fallen-

To know good and evil carries with it a responsibility. They were accountable. In fact they were on their way to Hell now.

Sorry about that Eve, I forgot to tell you that. Oh and by the way you will surely die.

There is one more thing that the devil did to complete his role in this scenario. He gave the Word the wrong interpretation.

ILL. Young’s concordance.

Adam’s Role: …and he did eat.(v.5)

It did not take him 5 seconds to see that the sweet woman who had left earlier had somehow changed…

1 Timothy 2:14  And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Adam went into this with His eyes wide open.

In order to restore fellowship with his bride he willingly accepted a lower state.

Truly a type of Christ who willingly took upon himself the lower state of a human being that fellowship might be restored with us.

Even when Eve was formed from Adam’s rib, he prefigured Christ- being wounded in his side that he might procur a bride.

Just as Christ was wounded in His side to redeem His bride.

Christ came to redeem us from satanic the deception such as Eve found herself victim of.

God has recorded this for us in his Word. We are not to be ignorant of Satan’s devices.

Yet, sadly, this has been recorded for the benefit of all mankind and yet 99% of people are going to stumble on into Hell. The devils too subtle for them…

What is even more sad is that Christians allow this deception to hinder their lives and growth. ILL. Gordon Rumford. The devil is too subtle.
